History
Before the Empire (2907-3209)
Miaftri was founded as a border outpost of the Naab kingdom in 2907 AA. Lenier Iaomiu, overseer of the region (chosen by the King), rebelled during the war between Naab and the Nemieir Kingdom. Lenier declared himself count of Miaftri in 2981 AA, he conquered the cities of Masem and Erbiao in the following years. The Sondmiao Magogracy attacked the county in 3011 AA, he annexed it by granting Lenier I the title of Prince. Lenier I helped in the following years with the wars Sondmiao waged on Niemeir; thus the Archimage granted control of the conquered lands to Lenieir in 3071. After the violent repression of the rebellion in the city of Irist by the Archimage in 3111, the principalities of Miaftri and Semor-Temie rebelled from Sondmiao. The two allied principalities, successfully defeated the Archimage armies, in 3113 they became independent (together with the Duchy of Irist). In the following years the Princes of Miaftri expanded their lands northward. In 3208 the three principalities of Miaftri, Lapemiao and Semortemie formed an alliance to defend against Sondmiao. After a peace threaty was signed with Sondmiao in 3209, the three Princes decided to unite, they unanimously chose Iakreie II Prince of Miaftri to lead the new Empire.
Rise (3209-3319)
Iakreie II attacked the city of Terne in 3225, he died during the siege. The second emperor, Rienil, successfully entered Terne. The Kingdom of Neoterne capitulated, Rienil annexed it in 3226 as a new principality and named its King as Prince. Rienil I then continued the war by attacking the Mio Kingdom, he was stopped at Mioron and due to unrest in the Miao armies, the war ended. The conquered Mio lands were given to one of Rienil cousins, who became Prince of the Mioterne in 3232. After the death of Rienil in 3278, the Princes elected Asiranni I, previously general of Miaftri Purple Legion (still of the Iaomiu dinasty). Asiranni decided to take advantage of the war between the Magocracies of Aviam and Sondmiao. The Prince of Limidmiao (dependent of Sondmiao), let the Miao legions through. With his help Asiranni conquered the Sondmiao Magocracy, the Archimage fled to Samiao. Asiranni granted most of the conquered lands to the Prince of Limidmiao. The western mountainous region of Sondmiao with the capital Sondist was granted to a local noble becoming the Southern Marks; this Marquis answered only to the Emperor but had no vote unlike the Princes. Following the death of Asiranni I in 3280, the Empire knew a period of peace under the reign of Rienil II, that lasted until 3305. His successor, Lammo I, defended against Toramuk raids in the south of Lapemiao, he drowned in 3307 while fording the Avierim.
The Old Um-Miao wars (3319-3349)
The Um state had expanded into the duchy of Irist in 3316. Fueled by the fear of a further Um-Ulum expansion, Emperor Altillen, crossed the Um border during 3317 winter and laid siege to Irist, starting the First Um War; the city was captured by the Miao Empire, while the Um reinforcements where stuck in the mountain snow. The Emperor was helped by rebels still loyal to the Duke of Irist. After the snows melted in the passes, the Miao legions crossed in the Um controlled Nivom kingodm. After the high losses of the winter and the rebellions that sprung in Nivom and Mulbur, the Um armies withdrew from the mountains. Thus Altillen easily took control of Nivom and Mulbur in 3320. Altillen granted control of Irist, Nipris and Vurtis, to a noble from Irist, creating the High Marks.
In 3328 the Second Um War started when the Um state, attacked the High Marks; in one year Um conquered them and the Semortemie Principality, entering Nadimmia. In the next year they surrounded Miaftri. Altillen legions were in the south fighting against the Crivetuk tribes, that had begun to rad the other Toramuk tribes and Lapemiao towns. After his victory against the Crivetuk, Altillen led his legions back to Miaftri, accompanied by the Toramuk tribes he previously helped, where he freed the city of the siege. Altillen regrouped with the remaining armies of the princes and retook the Semortemie at the end of 3330. The next three years the Miao and Um armies faced each other on the mountains of the High Marks, until the Um where pushed behind the mountains but kept control over Nipris and Vurtis. A truce was signed in 3333.
The Mioterne Prince inherits in 3334 of the Northern Mio Kingdom, the territories being incorporated in the Principality of Mioterne.
In 3336, information of Cltrip having traded iron with the Um-Ulum reaches the Emperor. So Altillen conquered the Cltrip oligarchy, the land was split in the three former principalities (Emudor, Gremul, Cltrip) granted to relatives of the the previous princes. In response Um-Ulum supported Cltrip rebellion to the Miao Empire in 3340, starting the Third Um War. The Empire abandons Cltrip to Um. However its armies invaded the northern Umii mountains, forming the Pulvur Marks in 3342. The Miao Empire also took back Vurtis and Nipris in 3347, and expanded the territories of the southern marks taking the city of Muludin in 3348 from Um-Ulum. A peace treaty was signed in 3349 in Muludin with Um, ending the war.
Northern Expansion(3349-3610)
Rifmen Duke of Nemieir, conquered Mibiao in 3350 further expanding the Principality of Miaftri northwards. In 3359 Altillen gave the independence to the Principalities of Emudor and Gremuc. Altillen died in 3378 to the Nadimmian plague, brought in from Mibiao, the Empire was highly affected and the election was tied between Rifmen and the Prince of Mioterne; after a long war, Rifmen allied with the Amisen Empire and took the throne in 3390. While the Prince of Mioterne was killed in battle against Amisen; which took control of the Northern Mioterne the same year. After this victory the Niemiean dynasty reigned until 3420, with Limilda I followed by Rifmen II.
In 3420 Lenieir III from the Mioterne branch of the Iaomiu dynasty was elected Emperor, he conquered the territories of the Lerem tribes and the Stermis duchy from the Vir Theocracy. In 3421 he granted part of the territories to Lapemiao and the rest to the new Leremiao Principality (a relative from Erbiao). The conquest of the Leremiao Principality, opened commerce with Gsemux and Mimia in the south, the imperial road to the pass was completed in 3447. Lenieir III then retook the northern Mioterne from the Amisen Empire, in 3450, with help from Filimmia army.
Asiranni II was elected in 3460, during his reign he defended the Miao Empire against an attack from Amisen between 3463 and 3467. However fearing the rise in power of the Mioterne Principality, the other Princes elected Iakreie III as his successor in 3513, from the Limmiu family of Feramiu. The Mioterne armies sieged Miaftri to put a Mio-Iaomiu Emperor on the throne, however the other Princes defeated them. Because of this Altillen II didn't send help when, in 3514, the Mioterne was invaded by the Deviem Great Clan from the south and the Solov Principality from the north.
In 3527 he started an offensive against the declining Aviam magocracy, the Imperial Legions defeated its armies and those of its allies (Cltrip and some Toramuk tribes). However Zeplar (tribe chief from Gsemux) conquered Aviam coast, founding the homonymous reign; while some of the southern regions were taken over the Toramek tribes. The lead of the remaining Aviam territories was granted to a noble from Uvindor in 3533. The Aviam Archimage was captured and before his execution he was forced to make Trefil (Imperial magic counselor at the time) his successor; thus Trefil became the first Archimage in Miaftri. At the same time the Deviem Great Clan attacked from the east but was held off by the Limidmiao army before it could enter Miaftri, the Imperial Legions then returned from Aviam and pushed back the Deviem behind the Mioterne river. The Deviem raided Elmiao in 3537, pushing the Solov Prince to swear allegiance to the Emperor for protection . The Psamac reign is annexed to Solov in 3539 by marriage. In 3553 the Miao Empire finally fully took back the Mioterne from the Deviem Great Clan, the Akesi Marks were created southwards of the Mioterne on land taken from the Deviem in 3554.
Right after Altillen II was elected in 3560, he led the invasion of the Amisen Empire. Amisen had lost part of its eastern territories and was in a state of decline. The Amisen emperor relinquished his title and submitted to Altillen II in 3561, becoming the first Precipice Prince. In the following years the Amisen culture brought back by Altillen II greatly influenced Miaftri and the Princes Courts; with some Amisen nobles moving to Miaftri. After the death of Altillen II in 3572, who left no preferred successor, the vote came to a draw. On one side Eklira (from Amisen and Mio descent) supported by the Precipice, Mioterne, Solov and Aviam principalities. On the other Limilda duke of Miulak (of Nemieian and Vomiu descent) supported by the Princes of Neoterne, Semortemie, Limidmiao and Leremiao. This resulted in a long war between the two factions, with conflicts in most principalities. It continued until 3583 when Uvindor was sieged and conquered by Limilda armies. The Aviam Prince was killed and replaced by a noble from Vovomiu. The votes then were in favor of Limilda II who became emperor. However Limilda was assassinated just two years after by the Mioterne Prince. Because Limilda had designated a preferred successor, there was no draw in the vote. Avedlide I thus became the following emperor in 3585, he started carrying a punitive expedition against the Mioterne; sacking its cities and executing the Prince. This caused most of the principalities to distrust the imperial power, withholding taxes and hindering commerce to Miaftri. The principalities of Amisen and Mioterne rebelled in 3602, hoping that more principalities would follow them. However Avedlide was feared by the other Princes, only the High and Pulvur Marks joined them. Avedlide stopped the rebellion in 3603, at the cost of most of the Imperial legions. The same year a new epidemic from the east crushed the empire even more. Cltrip seized this opportunity and allies with the Amestin Empire to conquer Miaftri. They took control of the Limidmiao and Aviamiao principalities, but were stopped during 3604 winter. The war continued but the front didn't move for years.
The New Um-Miao wars (3610-3760)
In 3610 the Um-Ulum armies crossed the Pulvur Marks, beginning the Fourth Um War and quickly sieged and completely burned the undefended Solov. The Um then descended to Miaftri, the city was conquered and the emperor was sacrified in 3611 to Ulum. In the following years the Um took full control of the Semortemie, High Marks and Southern Marks. Only the High Marks, the Neoterne, the Precipice, Mioterne and Leremiao were not occupied by Cltrip or Um in 1613. The four remaining free principalities elected Oporen as Emperor (leading from Nammiao the last non occupied city of the Miaftri principality). In 3625 Um and Cltrip clashed in Limidmiao; Oporen used this opportunity to retake Miaftri with the help of the Trissiem Reign and Hassiem Clan. The Um were pushed behind the marks in 3634. Filimmia and the Gsemux confederacy entered the war in 3637 as allies of the Miao Empire and helped retake Aviam and Limidmiao in 3639. Cltrip was submitted in 3641 after Amestin withdrew his troops. In 3633 the Neoterne principality entered war with Solov and conquered all of it in 3643, together with the Elmiao duchy in the Precipice principality.
The following emperor, Lenier IV, started raiding the Um coasts, between 3648 and 3651 when the Um-Ulum armies crossed the Pulvur Marks starting the Fifth Um War. Um conquered the western part of the northern coast from the Neoterne principality. At the same time the Imperial Legions were dealing with a rebellion in Cltrip, where the Prince was assassinated in 3650. After Cltrip was secured in 3656, the Legions separated between the Mioterne (where the Vir tribes were raiding, after having being pushed by Gsemux); the other part guided by Lenier IV decided to cross all Um-Ulum to attack the Um occupying armies. However in the forest they quickly were at disadvantage, the legions were completely eliminated by the locals. In 3658 Lenier IV was missing, even if only presumably dead, the princes voted for Rienil III to become emperor. Rienil allied with Lompuxiao and with their help the Um were on the other side of the marks in 3659. The war continued in the Marks, in 3670 the Neoterne Prince sacked Narevet (Um city) and the duke of Mibiao (inside Miaftri principality) conquered Um territories in the the west. Part of it were taken by the Emperor who created the Northern and Ifvik Marks. Rienil III died in 3671, being followed by Iakreie IV as Emperor. Semortemie with the High Marks entered Eptulum the same year. However Um with the help of mercenaries from the Mialof republic, pushed back the Miao inside the Marks territories in 3675. At the same time the Elmiao Duke rebelled from the Neoterne Prince with the northern coast territories (however Neoterne kept the city of Elterne), the emperor granted him the title of Prince of the Gelid Sea in 3676.
In 3691 The Lensel Principality helped by Amestin and the Safmi Reign attacked Cltrip, but the Imperial Fleet won. In 3710 Iakreie IV sent the Imperial Legions to help Filimmia from Amestin. After Amestin was defeated, the marriage between the Prince of Filimmia and The Emperor marked the annexation of Filimmia to the Miao Empire in 3713. Iakreie IV died in 3721 and was followed by Oporen II. In 3723 Oporen II helped the Tunin rebels inside the Lensel Principality, this allowed the western territories of the Mimia peninsula to be unified by the Duke of Selidia and annexed to the Empire as the Lakes Principality in 3730.
The Sixth Um War started in 3752 when the Miao Empire attacked the Um-Ulum territories near the Northern Marks, however they were pushed back. Um took back Nerevet and part of the Northern Marks However the High Marquis lost and retreated. His remaining troops where ambushed, in the north of the High Marks by the Count of Dimma. The Count of Dimma rebelled and declared his independence and became the Dimbur Marquiss in 3754. Thus Nipris Vurtis and Muludin were defensless and were conquered by Um with all the territories on their side of the mountains. In 3756 the Gsemux Confederancy pleaded allegiance to the emperor as a new principality. The Miao Empire tried to retake the cities but the legions were pushed behind the mountains in 3758. In 3759 Um took the northern part of the Cltrip principality. A peace treaty between the Miao Empire and Um-Ulum was signed in 3760 by Lenier V (Oporen II successor), in Sondist. The same year the Gelid-Sea Prince conquered Elterne form the Neoterne.
Southern Expansion (3760-3796)
In 3761 Elcorana Tissin (from the reigning family of Cltrip) general of the blue legion, staged a coup against Lenier V in Feramiu. Lenier V was killed and Elcorana Tissin was voted as the next emperor. However the vote results didn't account for the Imperial Will (vote by the previous emperor), it was thought that Lenier V didn't leave any. However in 3762 it was discovered and revealed to the public by Pastenni Limmiu, this invalidated the previous vote. The following vote resulted in a draw beween Elcorana Tissin ( by Cltrip, Lapemiao, Limidmiao, Gelid Sea, Leremiao, Aviamiao, Semortemie) and Tosaren Mio-Amisen ( by Imperial Will, Filimmia, Lakes, Amisen, Neoterne, Mioterne, Gsemux). This resulted in a civil war between the two factions. The Mio-Amisen allied with the Vir principality in 3762. The Tissin faction allied with the Toramuk and Leruxi tribes in 3763. The war was waged for seven years mainly in the Miaftri, Lapemiao and Leremiao principalities. In 3769 the Lapemiao prince chose to change his vote, which quickly brought the war to an end.
Just after coming in power Tosaren I offered the status of principality to the Vir theocracy. The great priest of Vir accepted and became the Prince. The Leruxi and Toramuk tribes were also subdued and their territories were given, as the Miamukla Principality, to one of the legion generals ( that stayed on the side of Tosaren during the civil war).
The successor of Tosaren I, Oporen III, strengthened the relations with the southern principalities and reorganized the Empire Army to account for the larger area it occupied. In 3789 the Filimmia Principality and Lakes Principality attacked the states of the southern Mimia , however the Safmi reign quickly switched sides and helped the Miao empire. In 3791 only part of the Mirkrat theocracy remained unconquered, Mirkrat had allied with Espiim and the Lemia Thc., however their fleets where defeated. Filimmia started at that time the invasion of Espiim but it quickly stagnated. The rest of the Mimia Peninsula was finally conquered in 3794. Oporen III granted this territories to the Safmi King, who became Mi Prince. Oporen III was assassinated in 3794, allegedly by Espiim. His successor, Talla I, from Emudor, sent all the fleets to conquer the Espiem Principality. The campaign was successful with only a minimal conflict. However only two years later groups of rebels from Siemia rose to power, the Prince was exiled to Filimmia and a new Prince (of a noble Deviem family) took his place.
Urris Peace and Colonies (3796-4000)
In 3796 the Miao Empire signed the Urris Peace, with most of the other states in the world, which froze all borders and territories. In 3827, Talla II founded First Colony, in the southern hemisphere, on Maltiz Cape. However he died in a storm during the return journey. Lenier VI (backed by Mioterne, Neoterne, Precipice, Lapemiao and Semortemie), was voted emperor. In 3829 Second Colony was founded by Fillimmia Prince. In 3877 Rifmen II, Duke of Mibiao is voted Emperor, the Mibiao dynasty lasted until after the end of the Urris peace.
Decline (4000-[?])
Limilda III was the Emperor at the end of the Urris peace. The Two Year Winter (due to Urris eruptions), sparked conflicts all over the Empire. Miaftri lost a great part of its population, out of starvation or because they emigrated towards Aviam or Cltrip. The Virmikal and Miamukla Principalities attacked the Leremiao in 4011. Leremiao land was split between the attackers in 4015 and the Leremiao Prince exiles himself in Gsemia. Filimmia took officialy control of the Aemie and Avermie archipelagoes in 4013, when they became protectorates. The Prince of Filimmia helped the exiled Espiim Prince to retake his throne in 4046, thus the Principality was back in the Empire.
